Actually, many people see the deceased in other portions of the room, and those near death seem to see them up in the corner of the room. They're not actually seeing them there. They "sense" them in their mind, and in their mind they seem to be there. Sometimes others in the room can see the apparition. Then, of course, they are appearing in the physical realm.

But you're correct that most often, the person appears at the foot of the bed. I don't know why that's true. It could be that if they were sitting next to them on the bed it would so startle the person that it wouldn't be good for them. It could also be that when there is a materialization, as at a seance, participants are instructed sternly not to try to touch the materialization. Staying out of arms reach may be a way for that to happen.
